Chairlady’s Report - AGM April19th 2008

On July 14th 2007 a coffee morning was held at 2 Briardene Avenue Scarborough, the profits from this event were added to the proceeds from a raffle held at the AGM in 2007 and donations of £86.00 each were given to St. Catherine’s Hospice and RNLI.

46 members and guests attended the Autumn Lunch at the Palm Court Hotel on October 6th 2007and 8 people went to the Spa Grand Hall on October 13th 2007 to see Lesley Garrett in concert.

For me the highlight of this year’s events was the visit by 31 members and friends to Burton Agnes Hall in November to see the Christmas displays and decorations, all prepared during the year by Susan Cunliffe-Lister. There was also an opportunity to enjoy lunch in the café and shopping in the courtyard after the visit.

April 8th 2008 was the 40th anniversary of the plane crash at Heathrow in which a former pupil of the school, Jane Harrison lost her life. A new book has been published to mark the occasion and there have been reports in the Scarborough Evening News and the Yorkshire Post. Jane was awarded the George Cross for her bravery in staying with a disabled passenger on the plane and is the only woman to have received this award in peacetime. There is a display in Jane’s honour in the museum at Heathrow airport.

This year I have publicised coming events in the Scarborough Evening News which also sends information to local sister papers. The paper has published photographs of the visit to the school building before last year’s AGM and of guests attending the Autumn Lunch in October. Details have also been sent to the local radio stations and the North Yorkshire Times.
