Secretary’s report - AGM April 19th 2008

There are 52 members present at the AGM today; 22 people have sent their apologies and some have asked me to pass on messages Judith Basham has sent her very best wishes to those who know her, she is sorry that she can not be here today. Joan Bayes who is suffering from increased disability also sends her best wishes to everyone. Enid Hargrave who is unable to attend due to illness has asked me to pass on her regards to everyone; she will be thinking of us all today and hopes that we have a good meeting. Jean Gilbanks is unable to be here today due to another engagement but hopes to be able to attend the next luncheon; she hopes that we have a good meeting & that the lunch will be as enjoyable as ever.

There are currently 175 members of the Association; two of whom have not paid their subscription for the last two years. Since the last AGM seven people have joined the Association, seven members have resigned and the names eight people who had not replied to correspondence for two years have been removed from the database. If anyone has any information about the "lost" members please pass this on to me after the meeting. A current membership list is available today. In spite of the slight drop in numbers there are still only two "intakes" between 1929 and 1970 which are not represented. Some people who leave the group feel that there are not sufficient members from their era but I feel a more positive response would be to invite others to come to events. The committee welcome ideas for meetings from members so please tell us what you want us to organise. Our oldest member, Grace Bremner, who transferred from the Municipal School when Scarborough Girls’ High School was established in 1922, celebrated her 100th birthday last week. I took her a card and a basket of flowers from members of the Old Girls’ Association and she asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone.

Please continue to pass on any news of former members of staff and pupils for inclusion in the newsletter. We are always grateful for contributions to the archive; I hope you will enjoy browsing through the photographs on display today, please add names if you recognise faces. Could I remind members to let me have new contact details so that you continue to receive correspondence. If you have access to the internet and check your e-mail regularly it is cheaper and quicker to send mail electronically.

Finally in 2009 Joyce and I both need to stand down from the committee after serving a second three year term in office. Neither of us plan to stand for nomination again which will leave a vacancy for secretary and treasurer at the next AGM.
