NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015
GLAUERT PRIZE

This year two girls were awarded the Glauert Prize. Both achieved A* in Mathematics and A in Further Maths at A level, and both are studying Maths at university.

Georgina Millar (left) is at the University of Durham, and

Jemma Greenin (right) is at the University of Bath.

Jemma has sent a letter of thanks. She says:

"I am writing to say a huge thank you for the Waterstone’s voucher for £250 you sent me on behalf of the Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association. It was an incredible surprise and a privilege to receive.

I was fortunate to have my enjoyment and passion for Mathematics encouraged and stimulated by some excellent teachers from Primary School onwards. I am so grateful to these teachers for all their hard work and encouragement which inspired me to achieve and so enabled me to study a subject I love at Bath University. I have completed my first term at Bath and have really enjoyed it. I hope by the end of my first year to have a clearer idea of what branch of maths I want to continue in and it is my aspiration that I can go on and complete a PhD in Mathematics by the time I leave Bath.

Thank you once again for your incredibly generous gift to me, it is very much appreciated."

At the AGM, members will be asked to vote on the allocation of Glauert Prize funds to Scarborough United Scholarships Foundation with the John Kendall Trust if our Association cannot continue. We hope that a representative of the charity will be present at the AGM.

Since the last newsletter we have received news of the deaths of some former pupils:

  • Hilda Smith (1930-36) a past member of the Association, died in July 2014. Hilda was a long-standing member of Westborough Methodist Church, Scarborough. She helped to start a cub pack there in 1949 and later served as Assistant District Commissioner for cubs.
